The toolbox for business process automation has expanded significantly in recent years. Whereas just a few years ago RPA was sufficient for many business needs, new approaches have now emerged, such as low-code application platforms (Power Platform), AI-powered solutions, and now increasingly advanced agent-type automations.

But how do these technologies differ from each other? And when should you choose which one? In this blog, we compare four different technologies: UiPath, Power Platform, AI-based automation, and Agentic automation.

What is Power Platform?

Power Platform is Microsoft’s low-code platform suite, which includes Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, and Power Virtual Agents. The platform is designed to provide business professionals and IT teams with tools to develop applications, automate workflows, and leverage data without heavy development work. For example, it allows you to create data visualizations or automated reporting that utilizes data stored in the company’s OneDrive, or streamline data transfer between functions. Compared to UiPath, Power Automate is more focused on modular and personal automation, and does not have the trouble shooting or versatility of UiPath, even though it is easier and faster to develop and implement solutions.

What is UiPath?

UiPath is a comprehensive business process automation platform that offers tools for process identification, design, automation, and management. UiPath combines classical robotics, AI, interface building (Apps), data services, and process analytics into a single automation cloud. For instance, repetitive, routine tasks in user interface applications are an excellent fit for RPA. UiPath enables the integration of different add-ons, such as image recognition and OCR, into software automations. UiPath is geared more for end-to-end process automation, giving the capacity to have more options and a wider array of automation capabilities for more complex automations. However UiPath does have a simpler version for development like Microsoft (Studio web), but it’s not UiPath’s core business.

What is AI-powered automation?

AI automation refers to solutions where automation relies on machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), or generative AI. AI can classify data, summarize documents, understand questions, or make recommendations as part of a larger process – often supporting Power Platform or UiPath. Examples of AI-based automation include various chatbots or processing documents or emails or customer feedback.

What is Agentic automation?

Agentic automation refers to autonomous, independent software agents that can make decisions, plan actions, and carry out tasks across multiple systems without continuous supervision. An AI agent can, for example, read emails, retrieve information from several sources, make comparisons, and forward requests. In other words, it operates much like a new virtual team member. Whereas AI automation can respond to questions based on previous data, agentic automation can fetch new data and process it further, for example in various financial management processes.

Summary of the technologies' differences

For many organizations, just one solution will not be enough – the most effective whole is built by combining these different technologies:

  1. Power Platform provides rapid prototyping and user-driven applications
  2. UiPath efficiently handles repetitive, rule-based tasks
  3. AI complements automation by understanding free-form language and documents
  4. Agentic automation brings the next level: proactive, learning, and independently operating intelligence
